Forging Peace in the War on Terror

Professor Lopez’s lecture addresses the problem of peace building in the global war on
terror, including Iraq. Professor Lopez will also discuss scholarly, activist and policy
perspectives on peace movements and the conditions under which they fail or succeed.
Professor George Lopez holds the Hesburgh Chair of Peace Studies at the University of
Notre Dame, and is founding member of the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International
Peace Studies there. His research interests focus primarily on the problems of state
violence and coercion, economic sanctions, and violations of human rights. He is author
of numerous books and articles. His most recent book, co-edited with Professor David
Cortwright, is entitled Uniting Against Terror: Cooperative Nonmilitary Responses to the
Global Terrorist Threat (MIT Press, 2007).
